Dangling by Maryann Hazen

How do you sleep at the end
of the day when there’s no strength
left to fight with yourself?
When the battle never ends
and the winner blows
out the window like a sheer, lace curtain?
How do you dream? I dream hanging
from a rope gasping in spasms.
I dream jerking on a gallows pole pursuing
the broken heart of the God forsaken bloody lamb.
How do you do when you wake?
I purge that little slice of slumber,
that salty splinter of naughty night,
ever so slowly, wondering how my skin
is still on my bones. I shiver and sluice the dark
down a hairy, yawning drain. I gingerly
touch at my throat with clammy
fingertips frowning.
I grapple to remember and grovel to forget.
I look in the naked mirror and think,
what the hell has gotten into me?

Maryann Hazen

Is a Poet, a mom, a wife and a Medical Transcriptionist living in NYS. Poetry is a life-long passion. It's been her good fortune to have poetry published internationally in hundreds of magazines and books, in electronic and hard copy format and She has also had the pleasure of receiving several awards and contests.

Some of her work may be heard in an audio edition of "Ygdrasil." This past year she was invited to make a guest appearance on our local TV network, "The Helen Weiner Show." The producers were kind enough to extend an open invitation to create and air a poetry based TV show in our area, which she is currently taking into consideration.

It was great fun being interviewed in "Perihelion" this past year and in June, "Gotta Write Network" generously showcased her poetry in a full page layout with interview. Just recently she received word that she will be receiving the Silver Rose Award for Poetic Achievement in the near future. She have been asked to help judge a monthly poetry contest starting in November for "Inscriptions", which she really is looking forward to!

On a more personal note; She loves Renaissance Faires, birdhouses, her pet hamster and reading. Other hobbies include needlepoint and gardening. She has an awesome tin collection and avoids the kitchen as much as possible.
