New site: GenerationNet.org is a voice for young people
GenerationNet.org, a new nonprofit group, has launched a website giving
young people nationwide a voice in shaping the laws that affect our lives.
The site, at http://www.GenerationNet.org, asks "If you could change any
U.S. law or policy, what would it be?" and enables members to
democratically choose their top priorities. The group then organizes
grassroots campaigns for the changes they've chosen.
"GenerationNet.org is a powerful new voice for young people in America,"
said Peter Schurman, the group's Executive Director. "For the first time,
young people throughout the country can come together on the net, decide
for themselves what changes they want, and work together to hold
politicians accountable for results."
GenerationNet.org is new in three important ways:
First, its issue survey allows respondents to dynamically add their own top
issues to the menu. "Most surveys limit your choices," said Schurman, "but
our uniquely democratic process gives everyone the power to post new
options."
Second, it asks young people what's important to them, rather than telling
them what they should care about. This gives them ownership over the
result.
Third, it commits to organizing powerful grassroots campaigns on any issue
they choose, using proven strategies that have worked for young people
before.
GenerationNet.org is a nonpartisan, web-based advocacy organization for
young people. Although it sets no age boundaries for membership, it
appeals to those born after the baby boom, generations known as "X" and
"Y".
