THE TWILIGHT SINGERS TAKE TO THE ROAD
The Twilight Singers, the critically-acclaimed legendary "lost" project from the Afghan Whigs' frontman Greg Dulli,
will take to the road with a tour beginning October 13 . Fittingly enough, the tour begins in
New Orleans, the town where the Twilight Singers just-released album, twilight as played by the twilight singers, had
its genesis.
On tour the Twilight Singers will be: Dulli on vocals, guitar, piano, organ; Harold Chichester (Howlin' Maggie, Royal
Crescent Mob) on vocals, guitar, piano, organ; Michael Gorrigan (the Whigs' drummer) on bass, vocals; Lance Ellison
on guitar, fx, vocals; Carlton Smith on drums, vocals.
The live outfit will be the third incarnation of this mysterious ensemble which for years had been little more than a
wonderful rumor. Initial recording of twilight as played by the twilight singers was done in 1997 in New Orleans, while
the Whigs took a year's sabbatical coping with degenerating relations with their label at that time. Enlisting Chichester
and Shawn Smith (Brad, Pigeonhed) to be co-lead vocalists, Dulli lit out for New Orleans, rounded up a crew of local
musicians to help out and began recording. The sessions started at twilight -- hence the group's moniker -- and ran till
dawn. Having completed these sessions, Dulli shelved the record when The Whigs severed ties with their old label, signed
to Columbia, wrote and recorded the highly regarded 1965 album and undertook extensive worldwide touring the following
year.
When Dulli had time to return to the Twilight Singers' material, he felt compelled to reinvent much of it: the original sessions
had been widely bootlegged and more importantly, he'd fallen in love with English acid jazz auteurs Fila Brazillia and was
anxious to get them involved. Dulli spent five weeks in Fila Brazillia's U.K. hometown, Hull, working up new tracks and
revamping existing ones.
The end results were more than worth all the effort and the long wait. Spin said: "twilight twists and curls like a crooked
come-hither finger…Imagine Massive Attack recording for Stax/Volt." USA Today gushed: "Dulli's voice … has a soulful
and sensual power that gives Twilight's shadows an irresistible pull." Wired agreed: "…twilight is a tragic soundtrack of noir
nights rich with passion, betrayal, and hints of light in the fog of loneliness. Crooning above piano, strings, acoustic guitars
and ambient beats, Dulli wrings his heart out like so many spirit-soaked cocktail napkins."
Now, with the live edition of the Twilight Singers, Dulli is remodeling his pet project yet again, with predictably marvelous results.
2Pac: The Rose That Grew From Concrete hits the streets Oct 24. The new release is a double album, spoken word release featuring artists such as Mos Def, Quincy Jones, Danny Glover, and DJ Quik interpreting 2Pac's poetry.

THE WORD ON MICHAL

the critics are saying about the album:
Ken Richardson, writing in the October issue of Stereo Review, said: "She wrote all 12 songs on 'Sky With Stars,' and they're
remarkably diverse, hinting at the best elements of Kate Bush and Tori Amos without, umn, rattling any Jewelry."
Meanwhile, Juan Mendes, penning a review for the October issue of Latina, advised: "Look out for Michal, a talented singer-songwriter
of Puerto Rican descent who is poised to make waves in the alternative music scene. For proof, check out her surprisingly original
debut, 'Sky With Stars.'"
WATT'S ON THE ROAD
Mike Watt--the groundbreaking musician who's arguably the hardest working and most respected man in underground rock--has his the highway
with the Pair of Pliers--on a major U.S. club tour which bdgan September 11 in San Francisco (see itinerary following). Watt had originally
planned more dates in October and November, but when asked by J Mascis to play in the former Dinosaur Jr. frontman's upcoming two-month
tour, Watt decided to cut "Enough Of The Piss Bag" short and tour as part of his old friend's current ensemble.
The "Enough Of The Piss Bag" Tour 2000 is Watt's way of celebrating his recovery from serious illness and a chance to bring the Pair of Pliers--
Tom Watson (guitar) and Vince Meghrouni (drums)--back on the road. Mike Watt & the Pair of Pliers will perform songs drawn from all
phases of Watt's musical history--from the Minutemen and fIREHOSE to solo material and some favorite cover surprises.
Beginning after the middle of January of this year, compounded by a medical misdiagnosis, Watt went through 38 straight days of fever, wasted
away to 130 pounds and lost four pints of blood before an infection inside the perineum (the soft fleshy area of the groin) exploded, necessitating
emergency surgery at the L.A. County Hospital which, in turn, saved his life. Four more months laid up in bed while the "incision and drain"
wounds healed kept the bass out of Watt's hands, his music arrested. For the first time since he'd picked up the bass guitar as a teenager more than
two decades ago, Watt was physically unable to practice his thunderbroom on a daily basis. During his illness, Watt actively contributed to the
ongoing public debate on low power radio, which Watt is strongly supports. Emails from Watt to his own flow list regarding this, written at the
time, can be viewed here:
http://bbs.sonymusic.com/showpost.pl?Board=watt&Number=1202.
Watt has recently gotten his sea legs back performing one-off gigs with various combos including dos (the two bass duo with Kira Roessler), the
madonnabes (Watt's Madonna tribute band) and a power trio which reunited guitarist J Mascis and drummer Murph, both from Dinosaur Jr., for
the first time in years.
Mike Watt's early punk bands, the Minutemen and fIREHOSE, lay the cornerstones for the alternative rock scene in the early 1980's. In 1995,
Watt toured the United States and Canada as a solo artist performing songs from Ball-Hog Or Tugboat?, his solo debut album. He's since played
bass on tour with Perry Farrell's Porno For Pyros and performed with the groups dos, Banyan (with Stephen Perkins, $ Mark, and Nels Cline,
guitarist on Watt's second solo album Contemplating The Engine Room), and the Madonnabes (a Madonna tribute band). Watt released the
critically-acclaimed Contemplating The Engine Room in October 1997 and toured extensively behind that album for more than a year to rave
reviews from coast-to-coast. He last toured with the Pair of Pliers in September-November 1999.

A3 IN THE NME
SIX SENSE
A3 - Back in action
Birmingham Six ex-prisoner Paddy Hill is due to join A3
onstage at London's Scala on September 28 to perform a track
from their forthcoming album 'La Peste.'
Hill has been a friend of the south London Elvis, gospel and
rockabilly devotees for some time and is most likely to join
them for 'The Thrills Have Gone,' a track to which he
contributes vocals on the album.
Hill was one of the group of Irishmen wrongly convicted of
the November 1974 pub bombing in Birmingham in which 21
people were murdered. They served some 16 years in prison
before their convictions were quashed on March 4, 1991, when
it emerged their confessions were beat out of them and that
the evidence was inconclusive at best.
Their plight was highlighted on The Pogues, 1988 track
'Streets Of Sorrow/Birmingham Six.'
Hill will also be in attendance to mark the official launch
of the Miscarriage of Justice Awareness Organisation (Mojo).
The group, with whom A3 have close ties, have worked in
recent months to draw attention to miscarriages of justice
in the British legal system.
Supporters of Mojo include Asian Dub Foundation, Bobby
Gillespie, Stereo MCs, and comedians Jeremy Hardy, Rob
Newman and Mark Thomas.
'La Peste, the follow-up to 1997's 'Exile On Coldharbour
Lane', will be released in the States on October 24, 2000:
