Nat King Cole

CAPITOL RECORDS TO CONTINUE NAT KING COLE "SONGBOOK" SERIES WITH SONGS FROM STAGE AND SCREEN AND THE KING SWINGS

Capitol Records announced in November they will continue the NAT KING COLE SONGBOOK series with two more releases on January 23, 2001.  Phase two of the series will feature SONGS FROM STAGE AND SCREEN and THE KING SWINGS.  Capitol created the "thematic songbook series" to spotlight Nat King Cole's prolific output of recordings from the groundbreaking Trio days through his phenomenally successful solo years and to capture the interest of fans across all generations.  Each recording contains 18 digitally re-mastered tracks packaged in a special DigiPak.  They feature artwork by Grammy® Award-winner Andy Engel and were compiled, produced and annotated by recording artist and noted musicologist Billy Vera.
The releases come during an especially significant time for appreciation of Nat King Cole's work.  In March 2000, the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inducted Nat King Cole, naming him one of the major early influences of rock n' roll, and June marked the 50th anniversary of the release of his seminal "Mona Lisa."
SONGS FROM STAGE AND SCREEN and THE KING SWINGS follow the first three releases in the series, Songs From The Heart, Try Not To Cry and Rockin' Boppin' & Blues which were released last summer.

Among the highlights from the stage on
SONGS FROM STAGE AND SCREEN are Cole's renditions of Lerner and Loewe's "Almost Like Being In Love" from Brigadoon, and "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" from My Fair Lady.  The recording also features "Ain't Misbehavin'" from the Fats Waller musical revue, Hot Chocolates Of 1929, and the Cole Porter classic from Jubilee, "Just One Of Those Things."  From the screen comes the Harry Warren-Mack Gordon OscarÒ winner, "You'll Never Know" from the 1943 film, Hello Frisco Hello, and Warren's "An Affair To Remember" from the film of the same name.  Other film classics included are "Love Letters" and "Let's Face The Music And Dance."

THE KING SWINGS contains one of Nat King Cole's biggest and most enduring hits, "Sweet Lorraine," which launched the King Cole Trio.  Long before he achieved mainstream success crooning "Mona Lisa" and "Unforgettable," Cole considered himself a jazz piano player and cited Earl "Fatha" Hines as his biggest influence. In fact, one of Cole's early band names was a take on the hipster swing terminology of that era, Solid Swingsters. Highlights of THE KING SWINGS include a hit from one of Cole's first recording sessions for Capitol, "But She's My Buddy's Chick," as well as the standard, "Don't Get Around Much Anymore."  Tunes selected for THE KING SWINGS are mainly from the Swing Era and feature Cole's take on Swing in all its permutations. Some tracks feature performances by jazz great George Shearing ("Azure-Te") and the Count Basie Orchestra ("The Late, Late Show," "Welcome To The Club" and "I Want A Little Girl") in addition to Cole, the King Cole Trio and orchestras conducted by some of Capitol's top arranger/producers (Dave Cavanaugh, Neal Hefti, Billy May and Nelson Riddle).
