The reason for why there are so many variations of the same basic idea in
our world is because different individuals require certain qualities out of
their daily life in order to have their needs met. Differences, while some
brighter than others, are now a necessity for survival, seeing how there is
no such thing as an identical universe. There is a great competition to
excel and only the most suitable difference for most types of individuals
will succeed. The good news is that not all of us have the same expectations
out of anything, regardless of what it may be, ranging from a car to
something as simple as a magazine. That is what made deciding on one of the
best magazines to criticize a more difficult task. I may have be looking
through what I considered trash, while others looking at the same magazine
were amazed of how well it fits their requirements. After a long search, a
more sophisticated online literary site singled out from the rest, known as
"Double Take".
One of the first aspects that seemed appealing was the simple, yet
intelligent and to the point layout. There were not many graphics, however
the ones that were included gave the magazine a certain image. For example,
while most sites have graphics in order to attract the reader's attention
and occupy space, "Double Take" had images with a more specific focus, such
as a person calmly resting on the hood of an old car while looking at the
sky in a very relaxed manner. That picture represented the link for past
issues of the magazine, and done so in a very thought provoking manner. The
idea implied that the readers of the magazine would be required to think
while reading, a concept new to many.
The guidelines for submission were loose, though tightly oriented around
intellectual work. The overall appearance of the magazine implied of one
that would not accept any work not stimulating to the more sophisticated
readers. Some of the subjects included compositions among the lines of
discrimination and other social issues, and the writers are expected to
contribute with new and thought provoking ideas in order to have their text
published. Anything revolving around those basic categories can be
submitted, regardless of what form it is in. The magazine accepts essays,
literary criticism, poetry, short stories, and art, among others. "Double
Take" thus appeals to a wide variety of writers due to those reasons. A
writer who prefers to stray away from senseless topics should not have too
many problems submitting their work.
The philosophy of "Double Take" is simple: make the readers think. A god
writer can easily do that regardless of age, gender or whether or not s/he
has been published before. Inexperienced writers are just as welcome to
submit their work as any others.
Creativity will be the key for distinguishing who does and does not get
published. The easy part is that creativity can be applied to anything, may
it be ranging from poems to short stories, and from essays to works of
pictorial art. A well suited example of how a photographer applied
creativity to his work was by taking a photograph of New York City traffic
and titling it "Survival". A writer taking such type of incentive is
definitely on the appropriate path for attracting the editor's attention.
Overall, the publication was very intelligently formatted, and done so in
order to appeal to an intellectual audience. When subscribing, the authors
should include a brief biography of themselves, what other type of work they
do, and how the current piece of writing came about. Being published in such
a sophisticated magazine is not easy, but a very worthy challenge.
