| Gainesville, Florida, April 20, 2001: July 2001 sees the Alternative Comics release of Opposable Thumbs #1, the first of Dean Haspiel’s new semi-autobiographical comic book series. Opposable Thumbs is Dean Haspiel’s new solo series about a born & bred New Yorker and the trials and tribulations of living in the big bad city. In Opposable Thumbs, Haspiel unfolds existential, uproarious, compassionate stories full of personal wisdom. Even the bleakest and grubbiest settings are lovingly, lusciously rendered by Haspiel’s sharp brush in one of the most recognizable styles in alternative comics, and "quiet" domestic scenes veritably simmer with graphic impact. "Thoroughly conquering the territory Dean began to explore in the critically acclaimed two-man anthology Keyhole with Josh Neufeld," said Alternative Comics publisher Jeff Mason, "Opposable Thumbs looks like the new front-runner in autobiographical storytelling." The first issue features a special introduction by autobiographical comics legend Harvey Pekar, illustrated by Josh Neufeld. The first issue is a 48-page collection, culling Dean Haspiel's best semi-autobiographical stories from the pages of Keyhole, Minimum Wage, Non, The Expo Anthology, and Dirty Stories 2. Subsequent issues of Opposable Thumbs will present fresh and new semi-autobiographical stories. Dean "Dino" Haspiel is the author of semi-auto-bio comix and super-psychedelic romances. In the mid-80s, Dino worked as an assistant to Howard Chaykin on American Flagg!, Bill Sienkiewicz on New Mutants and Elektra: Assassin, and Walter Simonson on Thor. In 1987, Dino inaugurated his comics career when he co-created and illustrated The Verdict with writer Martin Powell and went on to draw two DC Comics Bonus Books in Detective Comics and Justice League International. His comics appear in Billy Dogma, Keyhole, Non, Top Shelf, Minimum Wage, and SPX. Dean illustrated Sony Pictures Classics' SLC Punk comic and is a regular contributor to Harvey Pekar's American Splendor. Dino’s last Billy Dogma work, Boy in My Pocket, is in stores now, and his new book The Devil’s Muumuu is due Fall 2001 from Top Shelf Productions Dean Haspiel will kick off a promotional tour for Opposable Thumbs at Comic-Con International in San Diego, California in July 2001.
