Hellman also curated the popular NEW YORK PRESS ILLUSTRATORS SHOW at CBGB'S. 313 Gallery in 1999. The LEGAL ACTION COMICS Art Show at CBGB'S 313 GALLERY features lithographs, silkscreen prints, and original artwork by many of the contributors to Hellman's eagerly-anticipated all-star comics blockbuster Legal Action Comics. Legal Action Comics, a 256 page paperback featuring comic strips by seventy of the cartooning world's top talents makes its debut this July! Featuring contributors like Robert Crumb, Art Spiegelman, Robert Williams, Kim Deitch, Mary Fleener, Gary Panter, Spain Rodriguez, Jay Lynch, Tony Millionaire, Kaz, Julie Doucet, and many others, Legal Action Comics is quickly becoming the most eagerly-anticipated comics event of the season! With its appealing blend of diverse cartooning styles and offbeat humor, Legal Action Comics carries on in the tradition of ground-breaking underground comics milestones like Zap Comics and Raw. Legal Action Comics is edited by Danny Hellman, for over a decade the curator of the yearly Max Fish Cartoon Show, a central event in the NYC cartooning community. Hellman, a well-established cartoonist and editorial illustrator whose work has appeared in a wide variety of publications, (including; Time, Sports Illustrated, the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, New York Press, and The Nation), conceived the project as a fund-raiser to benefit his legal defense fund. (For information about the Rall v. Hellman lawsuit, see attatched document). Originally envisioned over a year ago as a humble 32-page comic book, Legal Action Comics quickly swelled to the status of overstuffed trade paperback due to the high volume of top-quality submissions. "I'd been trying in vain for years to get various comics publishing projects off the ground," says Hellman. "Suddenly, as the victim of a well-publicized frivolous lawsuit, I found myself in a position to turn to some of the best talents in my field for help. Right now there's no telling whether or not this book will help me defray the $15,000 I've spent to date defending myself in court. What I can say is that I've assembled a unique book that I'm extremely proud of; one that I'm sure will be enjoyed by both hard-core comics fans and ordinary folks alike!" In addition to the Legal Action Comics book release party and art show at CBGB's 313 Gallery, there will also be a book signing event at midtown Manhattan's largest comics shop, Jim Hanley's Universe on Wednesday, August 1st, featuring many of the book's contributors. Legal Action Comics, (ISBN# 0-9709363-0-3) will retail for $14.95. Distribution through Diamond, Last Gasp, Alternative Comics, and via the web.
